Slovenia’s “Circular Slovenia” initiative aims to become the world’s first fully circular economy by promoting sustainability, resource efficiency, and innovation, with a focus on key sectors like construction. Recognized globally, it serves as a model for sustainable economic transformation.
At the heart of this transformation is the Deep Demonstration methodology, which employs systemic innovation to address complex challenges. The initiative targets multiple sectors, with a strong emphasis on construction—one of the largest contributors to waste and emissions. By integrating secondary raw materials and bio-based resources like wood, Slovenia aims to make its construction industry more sustainable. Other key objectives include decarbonizing critical value chains, fostering innovation across industries, and enhancing collaboration among stakeholders, including policymakers, businesses, and communities.
To ensure widespread participation and capacity-building, the initiative includes programs such as Circular Synergies, which supports local experimentation and peer learning, and Circular Learning & Resources, which provides continuous education to drive long-term impact. Slovenia’s efforts have gained international recognition, with its approach being featured in Apolitical’s “100 Climate Policy Breakthroughs” as a model for other nations. By pioneering a circular, regenerative, and low-carbon economy, Slovenia is setting a precedent for sustainable development worldwide.
